Tollymore Autumn Photography Tour

Tollymore in Autumn - Ireland Outdoor Photography Workshops and Tours by Adrian Hendroff
Walk in the footsteps of the Starks and the Night’s Watch as you photograph the autumn colours in one of Northern Ireland’s most beautiful forest parks.

Tollymore (Tulaigh Mhór, ‘large hill or mound’) is Northern Ireland’s undisputed first state Forest Park, officially opening its doors to the public in 1955. It measures some 500 hectares (1235 acres) and its beauty, especially in the autumn, gives the place an exceptionally colourful and fairy-tale setting. Belfast born novelist C.S. Lewis drew his inspiration from here while the poet Edward Lear found it ‘full of beautiful ruins and bridges and trees and hills and mills and lawns and laurels’. Areas of the forest also served as film locations for the epic TV series Game of Thrones over several seasons in scenes involving the Starks, Theon Greyjoy, Ramsay Bolton and the White Walkers.

Ash, beech, birch, oak, fir, cedar, pine, maple, spruce, maple, larch, yew and eucalyptus – these are just some of the trees found in the park. Tollymore oak was used in shipbuilding, for example the Grand Staircase on the Titanic and Sitka spruce was used as pit props in Welsh coal mines.

This specially designed one-day photography tour around the beautiful Forest Park is bound to inspire and provide some delightfully colourful compositions to your autumn collection. We will visit Tollymore Forest on a weekday, when it is less busy and frequented by photographers. You will photograph the popular ‘stepping stones’ and visit some of the elegant bridges the Park has to offer, as well as the curious eighteenth-century folly of the Hermitage. During its peak, there will be an explosion of colour as the deciduous leaves that make up its woodlands turn a rich gold, brown, orange and yellow. With rainfall, you might also get a chance to see the rivers and cascades in full flow, while fallen leaves add plenty of colour to the woodland floor. If you’re lucky, you might also see squirrels, otters and even the elusive pine-marten in these parts. Finally, if there is a good sunset, you will be taken to a secret location and we will continue photographing until dusk for no extra charge.

This one-day outdoor photography tour is limited to 6 places only. It does not include transport, so you will have to arrive and depart in your own car.
