Copper Coast: Dawn to Dusk Photography Tour - Ireland Outdoor Photography Workshops and Tours by Adrian Hendroff
The Copper Coast, a UNESCO Global Geopark, is home to some of the most spectacular seascapes in Ireland.

Along its 20km (12½ miles) long stretch from Stradbally to Kilfarrasy, you will find a number of impressive sea stacks of varying shapes and sizes, such as the free-standing stack of Tra na MBó located in an isolated cove near Bunmahon.

The rocks that form the cliffs and stacks of the Copper Coast have up to 460 million years of geological history from the time when Ireland was part of an ancient ocean floor before it was shaped by erupting undersea volcanoes, an arid desert and two continental collision events. These tectonic events distorted and folded the rock into vertical cliffs, before it was carved by moving glaciers during the Ice Age around 12,000 years ago.

The coastline gets its name from a copper mining industry which once thrived from 1824 to the 1850s, primarily centred around Bunmahon which became the most important mining district in the British Empire. The ruins of a 19th century mining complex can also be found perched on a slope overlooking the sea at Tankardstown. The mines extended under the sea, with a series of adits built in places like Tra na MBó, at which cave entrances can still be found today. The greenish-blue staining found along cliff-sections here is the result of sea-water reacting with copper minerals.

During the winter months, when the sun rises to the southeast and sets to the southwest, the Copper Coast is an absolute delight to photograph, especially during the golden hour. The low-angled winter sun also works to our advantage for all-day photography. Rough seas whipped up by strong winds can also be a feature along this coastline. Even a moderate wind can result in a lovely backwash of waves that create dynamic trails leading out to sea.

At this photography tour we will focus on the beaches, cliffs, coves and stacks at Ballydowane, Bunmahon and Kilfarrasy. If time permits, we’ll also stop at Tankardstown, Kilmurrin, Benvoy or Annestown. We will aim to get as close as possible to the water in order to capture the drama and mood of the sea, but just as equally there will be opportunities to take in clifftop viewpoints which can give amazing views along the coast. Whatever we do, it will be an unforgettable day out!

Why Us
We will always give you our 110%. Sharing what we know and making sure you go away with the right skills, great memories and that special image is really important to us. Moreover, we are meticulous in our location planning and our intimate knowledge of the photo-locations mean that we can quickly adapt to the conditions presented on the day.
